Madgeburg Water Bridge Notes

· crosses the River Elbe in Germany
· world’s longest navigable aqueduct, with a length of 918 meters (about 3,012 feet)
· moves boats and ships
· was planned in 1919, and the Rothensee boat lift and bridge anchors were set in place by 1938, but construction was postponed during World War II, and then after the Cold War split Germany, the project was put on hold by the East German government
· finally, construction started in 1997 and completed in October of 2003
· before the bridge ships moving between the Midland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal had to make a 12-kilometer detour
· construction cost nearly €500 million, or $7,801,000,000
